According to the latest Global E-waste Monitor, the world generated approximately 62 million metric tons of electronic waste in 2022, an increase of about 15% in just five years. E-waste remains the world’s fastest-growing solid waste stream.
China is the largest producer of e-waste by total volume, while many European and Anglo countries generate the highest amounts per capita. The visual chart below shows that nations such as Norway, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States each produce more than 20 kilograms of e-waste per capita annually.
The rapid growth of e-waste is driven by shorter product lifespans, lower manufacturing costs, and rising global living standards that make electronic devices more accessible. While increased technology ownership brings many benefits, experts stress that recycling and safe disposal systems must expand just as quickly to reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste.
